With the current pandemic of COVID-19 going on and the work from home culture that has been adopted by many businesses rises the need for administrators to be able to handle their environments on the go anytime and anywhere.
Microsoft has two mobile app that can help IT pros manage, administrate and monitor their environments on both Azure and Microsoft 365.
Azure App
You can download the azure app by going to any Virtual Machine you have on Azure and click on Share to mobile and scan the QR code via your mobile.
Other way is to search on the app on App Store or Google Play directly. In this tutorial I’m using the IOS version of the app.
After installing the app you’ll be prompted to sign in with your credentials.
On the Home page you can see a general view of your resources and if there are any alerts that has been generated, you can edit the information by selecting the pencil icon on the right corner.
By selecting Subscriptions, you can see all your subscriptions and a detailed information on each one, check Activity log, Also you can configure Access Control, you’ll be able to give specific people a specific roles to your subscription.
By selecting Resources, you can view all your azure resources, monitor and manage each resource.
If you select a Virtual Machine for example from all resources, you can see the status of your VM, check on Activity Logs, CPU and Memory Usage and for sure turn off/on the machine.
You can even connect to your machine remotely but selecting this option will require you to install another app which is Microsoft Remote Desktop.
Back to home screen, by selecting Notifications you can check any customize alert on your resources that might have been fired or if there are any service health alert that might affect your resources.
By selecting Cloud Shell, you’ll have 2 options to choose from: Bash and PowerShell. You can perform almost every task you desire using cloud shell.
And that’s it for the Azure App, I really recommend you download it and take the tour yourself to discover and try the features above and more.
Microsoft 365
Now let’s talk about Microsoft 365 admin app, personally I think the app needs some improvements, Azure App has much better user experience in my opinion. Anyway, let’s get into it.
First thing first you need to sign in with your credentials.
The home screen is pretty simple, a general health information and quick link to other taps that we will go through later.
If you select the Hamburger icon on the top left corner (three lines) you can view a list of all the options that you can choose from, you can Manage Users and Groups, check your Billing Alerts, view service health and open a support ticket.
By selecting Users, well then you going to have a list of all your users and you can manage each one as below, you will be able to do the usual admin stuff, reset password, assign a license, assign roles and many more. If you are a Microsoft 365 admin then you already should have a pretty clear idea of what you can do in this page.
Groups are no different from users, you can also manage your Groups by the app, add members, remove members and more, you know, the usual stuff :D.
By selecting Service Health, you can view all the on going service alert that might affect your environment.
Last thing I want to talk about is Support, Microsoft 365 app gives you ability to reach to Microsoft Support and open a ticket regarding any problem that you face.
OK, this is the end 😀 Thank you and stay tuned for more posts.
